GENDER KNEE REPLACEMENT FOR WOMEN
Do you need a knee replacement?
When pain becomes constant and/or functional limitation is
significant, then consideration for a total knee replacement
should be made. Usually conservative measures are tried
initially, but if these fail, then knee surgery is contemplated.
Age is not a limit for a knee replacement as I believe in
quality of life.
What types of knee replacements are available?
If only half of the knee is arthritic, then sometimes only half
of the knee is replaced. This is called a uni-condylar
replacement. If more than half the knee is affected, then a
total knee replacement must be considered. There are several
good knee replacements on the market and I have used the Johnson
& Johnson PFC and the Zimmer High Flex knee replacement. However
more recently, Zimmer have changed the High Flex knee and
adapted it more for women and have named it the Gender Knee
Solution.
The Gender Knee Solution for Women
Recently, Zimmer have launched the Gender knee. It is the female
version of the High Flex knee, with three differences from the
original High Flex knee.
1. Anterior Flange Width
The femoral anterior resection of the female bone is narrower
than the male femoral anterior resection.Gender Solutions
Implants address this issue with a more narrow anterior flange .
This should reduce any soft tissue irritation anteriorly.
2. The thinner profile on the femur.
This results in less pressure on the patella and may improve
bending and reduce pain.
3.Change in the tracking of the kneecap
which should reduce anterior knee pain.
The Gender knee uses the same instruments which I have used over
the last five years, when using the High Flex knee.
